Water Scarcity

Water Scarcity

Access to clean water is crucial for health, but four billion people worldwide contend with water scarcity.1 The problem is accelerating as water supplies are increasingly threatened by climate change and pollution.

Water Treatment Technology in Canada

BlackBerry is investing in wastewater treatment technology in Canada that eliminates the environmental impacts of discharging raw wastewater into watercourses and the sea and consumes less energy than traditional systems. The implemented wastewater treatment solution consumes much less energy and emits less greenhouse gases than typical wastewater treatment systems.

Nyagatare Safe Water Project

BlackBerry is investing in the rehabilitation and maintenance of water wells in Rwanda, where the population is currently fetching water from sources that expose them to bacteria.  The economic benefits of improved water supply in the area will enable Rwanda’s Smart Cities Blueprint, a framework aimed to accelerate the adoption of ICT-driven initiatives in cities across Africa.

  1. Carbon Impact: Per well, about 2,500 tonnes reduction of CO2
  2. Water Impact: about 1250 people per well will be impacted with access to clean water
